Coach: Tim Sperber

Position: Head Coach
School: Colton High School
Explanation: This is Coach Sperber's packet from the Treasure State Clinic. He has some very good suggestions on how to build an 8-man program and how to run the option!

I. Best Coching Clinic Tip I Have Heard

A) Condition Before Practice.
1. Can guarantee positive practice ending.
2. Eliminates "I'm too hurt to condition" excuses
3. Clears players' minds - eliminates "Should I pace myself to save up for conditioning?"

II.Weight Lifting Is A Must

A) Must Lift Twice Per Week - Squats And Bench.
1. Colton High School lifts Sunday night @ 7:00, and Tuesday morning @ 7:00.
2. Follow bigger, faster, stronger.
3. Sets and repetitions should not maintain strength. You should build strength daily.
4. Begin lifting the week of game one.
5. Basketball, Baseball, and Track should also lift.

III.Diversify Your Offense

A) Run A Few Plays Out Of Many Sets.
1. Speed Option
a. Pro weak and strong
b. DBLS weak and strong
c. "T" Formation weak and strong
d. "F" Formation weak and strong
e. Trips, (no back) weak and strong
f. Add motion to every formation.
g 15 different looks or more - one play

SPEED OPTION BLOCKING

1. Never block playside EMOL. We are optioning EMOL.
2. If the defense has two men on the LOS outside our end, check off to a different play.
3. Allow lineman to adjust their line splits to be successful.
4. Block first man - head up to inside
5. Call for help if two men apply to you and block the closest defender.

EXAMPLES

A. Mike and Nose are stacked. Therefore, Nose is first man head up for the Center and Mike is first man inside fro the guard.

B. This gap defense shows the down block clearly.

Notice: Same rules apply to Lead Option.

READ AND BLACK SET OPTION

Split Backs - Offset.

 1. Causes defenses to shift to strength or play it straight up.
 2. Shift opens weak side to dive option.
 3. Playing it straight up creates a numerical advantage on the strong side and makes defense vulnerable to the crossbuck.

COACHING POINTS

QB - Take a deep open step, followed by a short gather step.
Ride the dive back with two hands on the ball. Protect the ball with your forearms. Allow the ride to square your sholders to EMOL.
If you give, finish the option play as you normally would.
If you ride, sprint at and to EMOL. If EMOL crosses your face, turn up field and become a runner first and secondary pitch man last. If EMOL chooses you, sit in the chair, point your toe, and pitch from 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock.
FB - Sprint throught the LOS aiming 15 yds up field. Keep both hands on the ball until you are past 15 yds. This applies whether you have the ball or not.
TB - Keep your 2 x 5 relationship at all times. Don't get lazy, look for the secondary pitch.
